    Aikido is a martial art that originated in Japan. Its founder was Morihei Ueshiba, who incorporated his philosophy and religious beliefs with his martial arts studies. Aikido translates into “the way of unifying with life energy.” Many times Aikido is seen as the peaceful martial art since it was developed with the intent of defending oneself without causing injury to the attacker.     Many people wonder if Aikido, the peaceful martial art, is for real. When I saw Steven Seagal movies, his martial art skills looked to be choreographed and not as solid as Jet Li’s. That was until I realized that his martial art was actually Aikido. Then, it became apparent that he was actually good as his martial art. In fact, Steven Seagal is the first American to ever have an Aikido dojo in Japan. Steven Seagal is for real. So is Jet Li.

    Then the question arises, can a martial art be a peaceful martial art that focuses on self defense, rather than offense? Would a peaceful martial art be effective? We are all taught that the reason for mastering martial arts is to be used for self defense and for good, not for attacking others. The reality is that most people would rather learn a martial art to be aggressive, not for self defense. So, you may wonder how does Aikido stack up against other martial arts?

    One of the things that is essential to Aikido and other martial arts is being in shape. Physical strength and endurance is good not only for martial arts, but for life. If you are in shape, you body functions better and you will be healthier. As you train in Aikido, you should always be working out, doing some exercise routine. This helps you stay (or get) strong, and will help you when the need arises to defend yourself against an attacker. One should also vary the exercises we do, since the body adjusts to these exercises and there are muscles all over that get much more exercise than others. One really doesn’t necessarily go to the gym and lift weights to get into shape. Simple exercises like sit ups and push ups are great for getting into and keeping oneself in shape. An added benefit to doing push ups and sit ups is that you can do these exercises in the comfort of your own home. You don’t need to go to the gym to do push ups! You can do push ups in your bedroom right before going to bed.

    So get in shape if you need to, or stay in shape by starting your own routine that includes push ups and sit ups. At first your body may dislike you, but after a couple of weeks it will love you! So like Nike says, “Just Do It.”
